The College of William and Mary, also known as The College, William & Mary, or W&M, is a public research university located in Williamsburg, which is an independent city in located on the Virginia Peninsula in the Hampton Roads metropolitan area, in the US state of Virginia, with a population estimated at a number of more than 12 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census. W&M was founded in 1693, by a royal charter issued by King William III and Queen Mary II, and it is the 2nd oldest institution of higher education in USA, after Harvard. Athletics
William&Mary's athletic teams are known as the William & Mary Tribe, who compete in NCAA Division I, in various sports, for both men and women, including in basketball, gymnastics, soccer, tennis, cross country, and swimming and diving. The men's basketball team is one of the 5 original Division I schools that has never been to the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament. In the 2004-05 season, the teams have garnered 5 Colonial Athletic Association titles, leading the conference with over 80 titles, in the same year, several teams competing in the NCAA Championships, the football team appearing in the Division I-AA national semifinals.
